Character Voices
Samples of character voices. A living document with semi regular updates.
As I work on giving voices to my characters, I will try to collect an overview here. A way for you to hear what they sound like and come with suggestions for what the voice of other characters should be like.
One challenge in making my voices is that most of my characters are Norwegians, so they will not speak entirely like a Brit or American. Of course many Norwegians speak quite good English and it would not be obvious that they are non-native speakers always. E.g. while I lived in the US most people could not guess I was a foreigner.
I once encountered an American in Norway with really good Norwegian. He no accent but you could tell something was off because it wasn't possible to place exactly where in the country he was from. It was a sort of too neutral dialect. And ironically he didn't use and English words while speaking. That is highly unusual. All Norwegians throw in Americans slang while speaking Norwegian. So ironically the American gave himself away by not using any American phrases in his daily speech.
Idun Amalie Wang
For Idun I aimed for a sort of down to Earth friendly voice. She is supposed to have a broad Eastfold accent but that I could not reproduce. I gave her a slightly Swedish accent instead.
Alvdis Collett
Alvdis is also having a Swedish accent. Ideally I want Alvdis to sound more like a bimbo or pornstar. So her voice is not done yet, but I think this voice is a good substitute for now.
Vorin Adlerkrantz
Vorin was a bit tricky because I needed a female voice that gave impression of someone with authority. Idun and Alvdis for instance have too soft and friendly voices to work as Vorin.
AJ Drakon
AJ is ongoing work, so I will put in several voice samples here to figure out a good voice. I want a voice that gives impression of a confident cocky, but likable and charming American downing beers with his buddies while talking shit.
Povel Vieregg
A bit uncertain what I will go for here. For Vieregg I know less what I want and more what I don't want. Vieregg is not some overconfident testosterone guy so that has to be avoided. Vieregg has a privileged background, manners and looks and still manage to fuck up things for himself.
